Flight school

We provide pilot training for airplanes and microlights
with our four volunteer instructors who prepare for aeronautical certifications, in order to develop general aviation,
as well as prepare for careers or professions related to it. We are also in contact with the National Education system within the framework of the BIA
(Brevet d’initiation à l’Aéronautique)

THE AERONAUTICAL INITIATION CERTIFICATE (BIA)

The Aeronautical Initiation Certificate (BIA) is a French diploma that certifies a general knowledge in the field of aeronautics. It is awarded to young people aged 13 or over, jointly by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, responsible for Transport, and by the Ministry of National Education.
This exam certifies a general knowledge in the field of aeronautics and space. A zero mark is eliminatory, except for the optional test. Each question is worth 1 point. A wrong answer does not earn any points. All five themes have a coefficient of 1. Only points above 10 are taken into account for the optional test. All compulsory tests last 2 hours 30 minutes. A total of 50 points out of 100 is required to pass the exam. It includes 100 multiple-choice questions in the following areas:
  • aerodynamics and flight mechanics,
  • knowledge of the plane,
  • meteorology,
  • navigation,
  • regulation,
  • history.
The courses, lasting around forty hours and spread over the school year, generally take place in middle and high schools.
They are supplemented by introductory flights conducted by flying club instructors.
Introductory flights provide the student with essential practical experience.
"Discovery" flights may also be included in the program.
The training is free, but families are sometimes asked to contribute to the cost of a flight.
After admission to the BIA, substantial scholarships are awarded by the French Aeronautical Federation (FFA) to learn to fly in a flying club and obtain the various certificates.
For BIA holders, flight hours can be subsidized up to €500.

THE ULTRALIGHT PILOT'S LICENSE

Conditions for obtaining
To obtain the ULM pilot's license, whatever the class concerned, you must:
- Be at least 15 years old;
- Hold the common core theoretical certificate, issued by Civil Aviation. (Exam in the form of multiple choice questions, organized by the territorial delegations).
- Have satisfied, with an instructor of the corresponding class,:
- A ground test. (Checking theoretical knowledge of the ULM class being practiced).
- A flight test. (Verification of procedures and the ability to safely pilot a microlight. Can be carried out through continuous testing or a specific flight).
Around forty hours of flight time with an instructor is generally sufficient to obtain your license.
The instructor establishes the various certificates, which will be required by the territorial delegation to which the pilot is attached, for the issue of the pilot's license.

Equivalences
Since the decree of May 4, 2000, there is no longer any equivalence.
If you hold an airplane, helicopter, glider or free-balloon pilot's license, or a foreign license,
you are only exempt from the common ULM theoretical aptitude certificate.
It is advisable to take the theoretical part specific to the chosen ULM class and the practical part with an instructor.

Passenger transport
After sufficient experience as a licensed single-seater driver (around 40 hours),
You can take the “passenger carriage” test with an instructor from the class being practiced.
This exam is prepared by referring to the federal program.

BASIC AUTHORIZATION (ABL)

The ABL is not a pilot's license like the LAPL or the PPL, but a flight authorization integrated into the training to obtain an LAPL license, which allows you to fly alone on board, within a radius of 25 Nm (46 km) around the departure aerodrome
Access to one or more alternate aerodromes provided that one or more reconnaissances of these aerodromes have been carried out with an FI(A) flight instructor is also possible.
Additional authorizations may be applied to the ABL by an instructor such as carrying passengers.

Conditions for obtaining:
- Be 16 years old or over on the day of the exam to obtain the certificate,
- Have a medical certificate of LAPL or PPL class obtained from an approved doctor,
- Aeronautical Initiation Certificate (BIA) less than 36 months old,
- Theoretical LAPL(A) or PPL(A) of less than 24 months,
- Basic theoretical certificate less than 24 months old, obtained before January 1, 2020.
- Have a minimum of 6 hours of dual flight time and at least 20 landings as a single pilot under the supervision of an FI(A) flight instructor.

Light Aircraft Pilot License

Privileges
Allows you to fly alone on board a single-engine piston aircraft with 4 seats or less, with a maximum take-off weight of less than 2 tonnes, without remuneration, on French territory (and European territory if you obtain English language skills), and with a maximum of 3 passengers after having completed 10 hours of flight time as pilot-in-command since obtaining the license.

Conditions for obtaining
- Be 17 years of age or older on the day of the exam to obtain the certificate
- Have passed the medical examination with an approved doctor
- Successfully pass the theoretical and practical exams
- Have at least 30 hours of instructional flight including 15 hours in dual control and 6 hours of supervised solo flight, including a minimum of 3 hours of solo navigation with at least one navigation of a minimum of 150 km (80 NM), during which 1 landing with a complete stop will be carried out at an aerodrome other than the departure aerodrome.
Passenger carriage may be authorized after 10 additional hours of flight.
This regulatory minimum is very low and takes into account possible aeronautical experience (glider, microlight, helicopter, etc.). For a complete beginner, approximately 50 hours of training are required.

Validity
The LAPL has a so-called “sliding” validity: you must, in the previous 24 months, have completed a minimum of 12 hours of flight time, including a one-hour flight with an instructor. If you do not meet these recent experience requirements, you will need to: Either pass a flight test with an examiner Or fly enough with an instructor or under the supervision of an instructor to make up the missing number of hours and reach the aforementioned experience requirements.

PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE

Privileges
Allows you to fly alone during the day on board a single-engine aircraft, without remuneration, worldwide (if you obtain English language proficiency), with passengers.
Unlike the LAPL, it is possible to affix qualifications such as multi-engine qualification, IFR qualification, mountain flight qualification, etc. to the PPL.

Conditions for obtaining:
- Be 17 years of age or older on the day of the exam to obtain the certificate,
- Have passed the medical examination with an approved doctor,
- Successfully pass the theoretical and practical exams,
- Have at least 45 hours of flight time in total, including 25 hours in dual control and 10 hours of solo flight time, including 5 hours of cross-country flight time and at least one 150 nm (280 km) flight with a complete stop at two aerodromes other than the departure one.

Validity
In fact, the PPL is valid for life, however the associated SEP (“Single Engine Piston”) qualification is valid for 24 months.
To revalidate the SEP qualification, there are 2 ways depending on recent experience:
- If you have completed at least 12 hours of flight time in the 12 months preceding the expiry date, including at least 6 hours of solo flight time and 12 takeoffs and landings, this is an extension
- Otherwise, it is a renewal.

Extension : you just need to do at least 1 hour of flight with an authorized instructor in the last 12 months.
Renewal : You must take a test with an examiner.
